‘Jack and ‘Caster
Posted February 3rd, 2007 by Howard TaylerI finished these two up a few weeks ago. First, here’s Cygnar’s “Sentinel” series warjack.

I’m most pleased with the way the rock under his foot and the pressure-gauge on his back turned out. Everything else is okay, if a little sloppy.

Here’s Cygnaran warcaster Commander Stryker. The arcane glow at his feet doesn’t show up in photos quite as nicely as it does in real life, so I’m going to go ahead and blame the camera.

Again, I think this model is kind of sloppy, but the runes in his cloak did turn out nicely.

Today I’m going to take these, as well as their mostly-finished compatriots, and learn how to actually PLAY Warmachine by letting Gus down at the Keep school me thoroughly. And by “letting” I mean “trying my best to win, but failing anyway.”
I finished two weeks of comics this week, which is why I get to go out and play on Saturday instead of staying home and working. Yay, productivity!

Aaaand I got schooled. Timothy played me (Gus played in a different match), and in a battle of ranged-attack vs melee-attack forces, the melee forces closed in for the kill (though not before they took some frightening pounding and had their formation broken.) Man, that Khadoran armor is tough.

That’s why we play them. Sure as hell isn’t for their speed. ;)
The Sentinel looks odd for some reason. Good, but odd… Any chance you converted the gun arm? Or it could be just the fact that I’ve never seem a Sentinel in person before (the local opinion is that they’re not worth their points).

No conversion, other than the rock under his foot. I built him to look like he’s turning to engage a new target, though — kind of a dynamic pose.
A press-ganger at the Keep yesterday was expressing the same opinion. Fie on you, I say. Had he been shooting at un-buffed infantry, he would have cleared the deck. Striker dropped “snipe” on him and he nailed four guys with his strafe from 15 inches out. He just didn’t do any damage because their armor was up around 18.

Bah, the Sentinel is better now, with the +2 to hit on all subsequent attacks thanks to the new changes in Prime: Remix. As for Khador armor, there’s very little anything shy of a Hunter or a Defender can do in the Cygnar forces.
Glad to see you’re picking up the good fight!

It occurred to me that the Gun Mages and their thunderbolt rounds could have broken the shield wall formation pretty easily, and while that attack would do no damage, the subsequent charge of an Ironclad probably would, once the shield wall was no longer in effect.
I’ll have to re-read some rules, but I think that enough successful thunderbolts could disrupt the formation completely, and leave that Khadoran unit unable to attack at all…

That’s a good idea. Just remember that Shield Wall lasts for one round, even if the models get knocked out of formation… if I recall correctly, that is.
Have you picked up Prime: Remix yet? It’s got all the rules, errata AND clarifications along with FAQs from all 4 books in the WarMachine Series. And the art is just… sooo… pretty.

I don’t have Remix yet — our store’s order for it hasn’t come in, and when I’m not cartooning I’m too busy painting to spend time reading the rule books I already have.
I’ve played the game exactly twice now.

Actually Kadja and I came up with another plan that could have helped. You had that bridge that just about all of his army came across, what if you had been doing lightening rounds on whatever was in the front of the bridge? You could have kept his whole force bottled in a nice close area. Just perfect for AOE spamming (if you have them, I never remember what other casters can cast) and then a charge or two with jacks.
He and I play a lot at my place on off days, then down at the Keep when we can. We try all kinds of crazy stuff. Some times it works (Iron Skin on a Man Hunter is simply sick and wrong) and sometimes it doesn’t (never put your caster in charge range of Bane Thralls no matter how much focus you have) but each time we try to take the time to critique each others strategies. We just have to get you a partner that can learn with you when you want to play.
Oh, and I found a copy of Remix, so I now have a full library of the Warmachine books. (Well, technicly Kadja has Prime but I have access to it and I have Remix, so it’s all good.) You are welcome to them…. if I’m not using them. ;)
