LibraryThing’s Top Fifty

Posted August 31st, 2007 by Howard Tayler

librarything.gifThe intelligent and attractive yakavenger posted some fascinating news: Apparently I am one of the fifty top-rated authors on LibraryThing.

I’m pretty sure this means that LibraryThing users really enjoy my books.

Here is my LibraryThing profile. We need to track down that guy who only rated me 2.5 out of five stars and give him a medal — he was rating my GroupWise book, and was far too generous. That thing is dryer than a sand martini.

I have to say, howard, that picture on Librarything is rather flattering of you. Are you sure you still have that much hair? ;)

Hey, thanks for posting this. I had almost entirely forgotten that I had a LibraryThing account, and went and updated my library and added it to my bookmarks so I wouldn’t forget it existed.

That’s cool, Howard. In related news, did you realize that you’d received votes for nomination for the Hugo Award this year? I was perusing the breakdowns (since I just got creamed by Naomi Novik) and noticed a familiar name. Look under the Fan Writer category.

Not a whole lot of votes, but hey, somebody was thinking of you! (For those who don’t know, this is the document detailing the breakdown of the nomination process for the Hugo Award. This isn’t the voting results for the actual award–that’s on a different list–this is just the detailed breakdown for the nomination stage.)

Brandon: That’s really cool, but I don’t want (nor should I qualify for) the Fan Writer or Fan Arist category. I mean, sure, I’m a fan, but I make a living as an artist and a writer of Science Fiction. I’m not sure how their definitions read, but by all accounts I’m pretty sure I’m a pro.

Still… it’s cool that people are thinking of me. Thanks for pointing this out!

Hum. That’s odd. I originally assumed–when I saw your name–that you were under the “Fan Writer” category, since that’s the category for bloggers. (Note that people like John Scalzi have been nominated for their professional works as well as for their writing ‘about’ sf/f in the fan writer category.)

I now see that it’s in fan artist where you were nominated. Maybe for your work in the Conduit program guides? That would constitute a location for a fanart nomination for Hugo. Your books would obviously be Proart nominations, though actually that would probably be ‘related work’ rather than proart, since I think proart refers to magazines and book covers only.

It’s complicated. All I know is that SOMEBODY was thinking of you. Two votes may not seem like a lot, but I only got 26, and I was one of the prime nominees for my award.

  6. Howard Tayler Says:

Ah — I hadn’t thought of that. I suppose program guides and the like might qualify as Fan Art, though I can’t imagine Michael Whelan or Boris getting that nomination if they donated a piece for a program guide.

But that’s probably just me not understanding where stuff fits.

  7. Brandon Sanderson Says:

Amusingly, if you look on that same list, you Michael Whelan DID get nominations in the fanart category. Two of them, just like you. So, in a way, you can say you tied Whelan for the Hugo….

Of course, I could be off on this whole thing, since they spell the name ‘Taylor’ on the chart, there. Still, I wasn’t able to find any kind of sf artist of any renown under the name “Howard Taylor.” I think they meant to say you. I always want to put an ‘o’ instead of an ‘e’ myself, actually.
