Willis Celebrates a Decade
Posted September 9th, 2007 by Howard Tayler
1997. The term “weblog” is coined. Netscape is the browser of choice for 72% of users. Titanic crashes into theaters. And David Willis posts his first “Roomies!” comic.
It’s now called a blog. Netscape hit an iceberg of its own. And we still love “Shortpacked!” — the popular daily comic that arose from Willis’ first comic production.
On the Web, ten years of regularly-updated entertainment is a significant achievement that precious few can boast. Blank Label Comics is proud to salute David Willis as he celebrates his tenth anniversary in webcomics.
To help celebrate, here’s a Top 10 List of the all-time favorite storylines year-by-year from David Willis:
- 1997: “Obligatory Flashback Sequence”
- 1998: “Sexuality and the Modern Joyce”
- 1999: “Beer Necessities/No Regrets”
- 2000: “Puppy”
- 2001: “Guess Who’s Coming to Denver”
- 2002: “Round Two”
- 2003: “The Best I Could Do”
- 2004: “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”
- 2005: “Mrs. Greg Killmaster”
- 2006: “The Drama Tag”
Congratulations, David!

Hey! A reference to the bonus story in the first book! Is that a deliberate tie-in, or was it purely character-driven?
And how many people will buy the first book because I just told them that they need it to fully appreciate this strip?

Well, once Schlock had a shovel in his hand, it was unnatural to NOT make the reference. It was deliberate, but I wasn’t setting out to sell books with it. I just figured people who had the books would enjoy this strip a bit more.

hi Howard,
i’m fairly sure this is the wrong place to post this but as i am browsing from work i’m afraid that the easiest methods must prevail.
its goodto see you adding a link to girl genius, another great webcomic, yet my incisive mind spotted a tiny error with your posted link, i suspect it may be obvious to any who focu their attention on it … http://www.http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php
the error (i’m sure you spotted it) lies in the additional http://www. that has been added to the link somehow (surely by an automated process rather than the dreaded user error!

only1doug: Yeah, it’s the wrong place to post it, but off-topic posts seem to be the theme for this particular entry’s comments page.
The URL error will be corrected with tonight’s update.

I used to like Willis’s work, and still read it from time to time, but given the language he uses in his strip I’m surprised you’d post a link to his strip without warning.

I like mac ‘nd cheese.
Far be it for me to disregard an established theme.

This begs the question… are off-topic posts still off-topic if the theme of the comment thread is “off-topic posts?”
The answer can only be obtained by fiat. I declare YES!

Well and good but since the topic is a decade of Willis, I insist on Chartreuse and Bacon!

Since it seems the right place for it, I have to ask. Do you think that “weblog” became “blog” to avoid confusion with the verb? E.g., imagine “I blog, u blog, and we blog” with weblog as the verb. I weblog, u weblog, and then we weblog sounds like something for little pigs all the way home.
What was the topic again?
