A week of comics done in two days… BAM.

Posted April 29th, 2008 by Howard Tayler

I like being on my A-game. Monday and Tuesday of this week I knocked down a week of comics, scripting, pencilling, inking, and coloring. And it wasn’t just talking-head stuff, either. The week I scripted and drew had elephants, fancy equipment, and impending peril.

(Peril is difficult to draw.)

Anyway, that leaves the whole rest of the week for goofing off coloring the Bonus Story, in hopes of maybe, just maybe, SOMEDAY finishing this next book: Schlock Mercenary: The Teraport Wars.

I’m sorry it’s taken so long. I swear, I will get this thing sent off to the printer, and the moment I do, I’ll start work on the next one so they’re not spaced quite so far apart.

    Howard, you rock!

I appreciate you want to keep the books coming (and we’ll keep buying ‘em).

I’m keeping an eye out for shirts. I could use some new T-shirts, provided they’re not white…

  2. Austin Shackles Says:

Oh, and meant to say: better to take a week or three longer in the initial phase and reduce the number of errors which have to be corrected later.

  3. WEKM Says:

Actually, you are looking at it all wrong. Peril is easy to draw. I knew a Corporal Peril and he was about as plain vanilla looking as someone can come, (would have made a perfect spy).
He did go out of his way to live up to his name though. After several years as a porn star, talk about putting yourself in peril, (ok, sorry about the double meaning from that one, it really was unintentional) he decided to become a Marine grunt, because he was bored.
When you see a low ranking enlisted man driving a 911 Twin Turbo, just remember, there HAS to be a story behind it.
Don’t tell me it is just the poor and unprivileged who join. Some of us do it out of a sense of duty. Yes we are anachronisms, and YES we’re proud of it.

Still waiting breathlessly for the next book.
Oooo, look at the pretty sparkles…
    BREATH DANGET!
Gasp! Oh yea, got to remember that is just a figure of speech.

So Smart Howard has decided to come into work today? ;)

  5. McNutcase Says:

Books are great, but please don’t work yourself too hard. We want Smart Howard to keep showing up for work, so make sure he gets breaks, OK? There’s no gain in driving yourself so hard you can’t be Smart Howard.

    That said, yay buffer!

  6. halcyon1234 Says:

How hard can it be to draw peril? Aren’t they just little white, round things? Unless you’re drawing the oysters, too. Those things have some serious _texture_ going.

  7. kyevan Says:

Just remember, all work and no play makes Howard a dull boy.

Of course, if work and play are the same thing…

You should set up some sort of auto-magically incrementing php script that shows how many weeks (or days) of strips are currently in the buffer, so when it gets low, we won’t bug you so much about the next book. I have a little experience with php if you needed someone to write it.

Of course this leaves you open to more whining and complaints when the buffer falls behind (which it never does right?). I assume us Schlockers are kind and amiable people. Cough. Right guys?

  9. mbarker Says:

Peril may be difficult to draw, but I guess it’s easy to color? After all, I remember the yellow peril, the red threat, and so forth. I guess peril is just a primary color thing, though, cause I don’t remember anyone worrying about the plaid perils of pauline or anything like that. Or mauve, turquoise, or pastel perils?

A new party game: What color is your peril? Perils gone wild!

I seem to recall hearing this strip (or what it’s setting up) mentioned in a certain podcast…

    :)

  11. Jace Says:

Awesome. I really want to see what you came up with for this one, after the musings on the podcast.

  12. WEKM Says:

And after all, even Howard said, “What’s the worse thing that can happen when no one is expecting a shot to be fired.”
    Oh, the carnage…..

  13. kyevan Says:

… Who wants to take the long odds on the system surviving mostly intact?

  14. zenkitty Says:

Personally, I’m impressed at how quickly the books are coming out, considering all that’s involved and everything else you two are doing.
