It’s a Hit With The Listeners

Posted May 15th, 2008 by Howard Tayler

We usually get nothing but positive feedback about our podcasts over at WritingExcuses.com. This week, however, the discussion under the ‘cast has been especially enthusiastic, and listeners seem thrilled with the podcast itself. Here are some samples:

Thanks so much for this podcast! I love hearing you guys talk about this stuff…
And Howard, thank you for finally hitting the nail on the head about Harry Potter.

–Lauren B

I love you guys! I’ve been killing myself to try to come up with a decent magic system for a story, and I wake up this morning to find that you guys did a podcast on it!
Get out of my head, get out of my head!

I didn’t realize you were making up the example of Spock’s extra eyelids until you called them radioactive.

i disagree with a few points, one you do effectively have a magic system, your gravity manipulation and terraport systems work magically. VERY rule based, true, but magical.

also one of the things you gain from a rule based system is an easier time coming to the logical extension of your magics effect on the world. often in fantasy i see a world completely at odds with its magic, which it will genaraly allege to have existed for centuries. in other words the ‘magic’ in your world is well thought out, its implications on warfare, and civilization/the economy at large are aperent in your story. however if you can waggle your fingers and conjor a real/permanent something out of thin air, or create a portal to somewhere siege warfare is pointless. if a mage can cast fire and frost bolts in a pre-industrial setting you will see them in mines and as siege weapons. the rules allow you to define what is reasonable and incorporate it into a believable world.

“I didn’t realize you were making up the example of Spock’s extra eyelids until you called them radioactive.” Eh? I distinctly remember Spock’s extra eyelids in Operation: Annihilate! (which was actually based on a structure in the eyes of certain birds) and how cheated I felt with that aspect of the story.

Oh yes, “they” (means: Me included ;) ) like you!

And sure the discussion sprang: We began with discussing “my system is mystier than thine” or so ;)

Or at least: “Tolkien is XYZ”, which is similar to saying “My magic system…” ;)

Or maybe there are just more people around who, like me, love creating and discussing magic systems, than I thought…

Are there any HP7 spoilers? Not only have I not read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, I also haven’t been spoiled to anything that happens yet.

    I know, amazing.

  5. Howard Tayler Says:

    @guitarfan01: No HP7 spoilers. You’re safe.

  6. Curt Says:

I’m not completely sure; but I think Sgt Schlock may have quoted an as yet un-numbered rule. “Somebody tried to kill us. Look sharp, weapons ready, don’t get dead.”
