Another Twitter Experiment…

Posted May 20th, 2008 by Howard Tayler

Schlock has his own twitter page, and he’ll be twittering in-character for a bit. Once a day, no more than that. Don’t expect big punchlines or anything. It’s just an experiment.

If this works well, I have NO IDEA how I’ll format it for inclusion in a book…

I’d think putting the Twitter as a line under each comic wouldn’t be too bad?

  2. Peter Crouch Says:

    Character commentary?

love the idea - will be interesting to see how it turns out (schlock’s twitters are one of the few that are going strait to my phone)

  3. Parkway Says:

Fun to read on the web, but it would spoil a comic version for me.

    Also: Eeeww!

  4. CrazyDreamer Says:

Othar’s Twitter (http://twitter.com/Othar) will eventually be used as an extra in a Girl Genius print collection, according to Phil Foglio. As it’s currently on its third story arc, I expect that the first such print installment will be sometime before you need to figure out what to do with the Schlock Twitter.

Shameless self-promotion: You can find my review of Othar’s Twitter and my e-mail interview with Phil Foglio about it at http://criticalmass.crazydreams.org/tag/othars-twitter.

  5. Tim Tylor Says:

I’d recommend Othar’s Twitter too. It’s a beautiful demonstration of how to tell a good story in short sputters.

  6. mbarker Says:

Is there an archive? It appears to be just one current tweet and one previous one? I’m not a twitter user, as you can tell.

  7. ollie Says:

exposing my ignorance in things technical, but perhaps it would save hundreds (or perhaps THOUSANDS) time if someone could briefly explain what twitter is and why it will improve my life!!! That way I won’t have to find out for myself, and you can have fun explaining it to me!!

  8. mbarker Says:

As I understand it, it’s a way to send very short text messages from your cellphone to the web. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter has some background about it. Kind of a blog/public interface for cellphone text messages - so instead of just heckling a small circle of friends from your cellphone, you can blast a bunch at once. Or in the case of Schlock, I suppose you can spread the ominous hummmm . . .

  9. Tim Tylor Says:

It’s basically a blog-system for very short posts, up to 140 characters. You can make and read posts on the web or by phone or IM. I suppose it’s a sort of cross between blogging and text-messaging.

  10. Howard Tayler Says:

“Blogging for texters” is a good way to describe it.

  11. Parkway Says:

And Schlock doesn’t strike me as either - but maybe I’m just old!

  12. bbullock Says:

“Plasguns sitting heavy in my gut” is now my new term for feeling sick to my stomach.

  13. zenkitty Says:

    Too… much… technology…

    I’m a dinosaur, and I think I’m becoming extinct.

ION, I want Rule 37 on a t-shirt. Or a button, so I can wear it all the time, to warn people of my new philosophy of life.

  14. Ketira Says:

I use Twitter (http://twitter.com/ketira ) to keep friends updated on what’s going on RIGHT THEN in my Life. I use it via the web, and try to update every other day or so. As the site says, it’s used to answer the question: What are you doing right now?

    CrazyDreamer: I wouldn’t be surprised if Phil & Co. turned Othar’s twitter into a radio show…. ;)

  15. Howard Tayler Says:

Zenkitty: The Rule 37 tees are here (Sandra picked them up 20 minutes ago, and is on her way back with them right now.) I’ll be wearing mine all afternoon.

  16. kyevan Says:

    Awesomeness! And it IS amusing.

  17. ShadowDragon8685 Says:

Pretty darn interesting. Kind of a “140 character or less” update about what’s going on in the comic.

The scope of Schlock Mercenary dosen’t often lend itself to a deeper understanding of the day-to-day affairs of our favorite sociopathic mercenary blob, or of his inner thoughts; the Twitter update is handy. I’ve bookmarked it! :)

  18. ollie Says:

    Wow….

Communication gone wild! Soon we will be pumping the words straight into our brains. Not a new idea, I know, but we seem to be pushing ourselves in that direction… I mean, who WOULDN’T want a cell phone that lets your friends message your conciousness directly??

    You know….

    WHAZZAPPPP????

wonder what the ringtone would be???? (mine would be ‘duhhhhhh’)

  19. csadn Says:

Another piece of tech I have no use for….

    Monday: Nothing.
    Tuesday: Nothing.
    Wednesday: Nothing.
    Thursday: Nothing.
    Friday: Nothing.
    Saturday: Nothing.
Sunday: Nothing. Nothing. (Twice on Sundays, y’know…. :) )

  20. aerogeist Says:

I didn’t think it was possible, but is that a typo in the 4th frame, or just TAG’s sense of humor?

Just seems a little odd to say someone was a certain amount too short to nanny bag, then comment that they’re that amount shorter now…

  21. kyevan Says:

Aero: He was about 30 cm too short, because had he been 30 cm taller, he wouldn’t have been hit in the head. He’s 30 cm shorter because, hey, no head.

  22. hida_dragonbane Says:

I wish you the best with your “drifting away from the web” plan. I personally have zero interest in reading Cellphone Comics, though. Phones are for talking to people, not for reading. I have a computer for that.

  23. Howard Tayler Says:

@hida_dragonbane: Not sure if you’re talking to me or not. “Drifting away from the web” is not my plan, but providing content that can be consumed from multiple platforms may be strategic in coming months and years. While I agree with you in large measure regarding “phones are for…” there is a rising generation who would completely disagree.

Whatever will we do once they’re in charge?

  24. Parkway Says:

But what’s the business model for twittering to mobile phones?

  25. Peter Crouch Says:

Twitter is a way of getting personal messages out fast. Not necessarily exclusively for phones.

I use it as a way to interact and post my thoutghs throughout my workday. Twitter allows me to have a bit if useless banter that I’d usually have with colleagues

  26. anarchic_teapot Says:

Ahhh. Othar’s Twitter and now Schlock’s. The only reasons in the whole universe to let the guy who invented Twitter live.

    Wonderful.

  27. aerogeist Says:

Thanks kyevan, makes perfect sense, just wan’t clicking at the time =)

  28. gornul Says:

It’d be nice if the Twitter feed could be shown straight on the page, or at least LINKED somewhere on the page.
