Just to prove I can do it…
Posted July 22nd, 2008 by Howard Tayler… here is a picture I took last night as I drove towards Las Vegas. The crepuscular rays were much more pronounced in person. I blame the camera phone.

In order to get this photo onto the web I needed to 1) mail the picture to my gmail account, 2) upload it to LunaPic for cropping, 3) save it back to the local drive, 4) upload it to the blog.
I’m sure there are faster, 21st-century ways to do this, but this wee, ancient laptop (Win98) has no working USB port, and no image editor installed. Oh, and I don’t have a FlickR account.

One faster and 21st century way to do it would be to download Irfanview, a free and lightweight (read “tiny”) image viewer that will also allow you to do some basic image editing.

@ Alex: But will it run on Win98? That might be a sticking point.
Nice image though.

‘Crepuscular’ is a good word. Right up there with ‘glabrous’:-)

from Irfanview FAQ:
Q: Is IrfanView compatible with Windows 95 or 98?
A: Yes, IrfanView is compatible with all Win9x- and later Windows versions. Win9x means: Windows 95, 98, 98 SE and Windows ME.
been a user for many many years, works a treat.
shame it doesn’t fix usb ports ;)

“IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for non-commercial use) graphic viewer for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista. ”
So Yeah, it will run on win98 :-)
(now did I win first place in the upcoming pre-order rush ?)

Wow. Win98. I have exactly one use for Win98, and that would be to play MechWarrior 2. Anything newer and the installer complains that “this application does not currently support Windows NT” and suicides. I hope you’re at least running ‘98 SE…

Actually, now that I come to think of it , MW2 did work on WinME, but that OS was just bollixed enough to be completely unpredictable.

Crepuscular rays are actually a very subtle atmospheric phenomenon. When you’re seeing them in person, you get the full benefit of your vision system, which is *very* good at spotting edges. Your camera shows the sky as it really is.

jabrwok: Except ‘crepuscular’ doesn’t remind me that Wikipedia’s page about glabrousness used to contain porn. The free online encyclopaedia that anyone can make NSFW.
Linxan: Shogun: Total War also requires Win98. A pity, since the only computer I’ve ever had Win98 on was a piece of junk.
