SDCC Report: Day One
Posted July 24th, 2008 by Howard TaylerSo busy…
Did a brisk business once the doors finally opened. Met lots of fans, met lots of peers, met lots of friends. There’s a social aspect to this event that is easy to understate.
I saw Randy Milholland across the way as we were setting up, and I hollered out “HEY RANDY!” Milholland turned to see me, and so did an unfamiliar face. Turned out it was Randall Munroe of XKCD fame, and of course I didn’t recognize him right away. But now we’ve met (he’s charming, and every bit as knowledgable as his strip may lead you to suspect). Oh, and Milholland and I had a great talk, too.
Had a wonderful dinner with Joey Manley and friends, and we had some fascinating business discussions. The food at Bocca was delicious, too.
But I don’t have time to tell you about everything. I can’t even scratch the surface.
As of this morning there is only one advance-copy pre-order sketch edition available. I expect it to be gone before 10am.
And now I need to get back to work

Yeah, well, that sketch edition is there, and I am here. Hmph. [hint, hint]

That’s what you get for skipping Penguicon. You almost didn’t meet Randall Munroe! :-)

D’oh! I knew I forgot something when I stopped by to pick up a Tub of Happiness for a friend. Oh well… it was a long fun day anyhow.

I think Lota needs a friend.
How about Sotet?

Randy Munroe ? Cool, not only is he a great artist, he’s also the only webcomic type besides you to come up with a t-shirt I’ve been willing to spend money on.
His “Science” shirt is perfect for annoying liberal arts types! Sadly, it also annoys a few of my instructors but that’s the way life works. The worst reaction I’ve managed with “Rule 1″ is a blank look. The best reactions are from the folks who go out of their way to come out, interrupt me, and point out that Rule 1 is actually missing the first step. . .

I’ve been reading Something*Positive for several years, and I’ve always wondered what Randy is like face to face. He’s so insidiously funny on S*P (the first comic in the archive is all that you need to read) that I imagine him to be extremely snarky when he’s walking down the street.

Hmpf, where are the blog updates ?
Think about the poor people from Europe, we count on blogs to have a little ‘we were there’ feeling :-)

Having met both Howard and Randy for the first time, I must say that they’re both very nice people in person. I expected that from Howard and was pleasantly surprised that my mental image (likely based on Davan) was wrong.
I am now the proud owner of a nice piece of art that either or both may choose to share.

And that “one advance-copy pre-order sketch edition”? Mine! Mine, I tell ya! Mwah-ha-ha-ha! I am doing the Happy Schlocker dance–and it’s a good thing none of you can see me because I can’t dance worth a darn.
I also grabbed both the magnetically sticky and the molecularly sticky warning signs. Yes, they are insanely cool.
Howard was kind enough to deface my copy of Schlock Mercenary: Under New Management, which I was unable to order as a sketch edition due to timing issues. And he created a sketch of Kevin trying to make sense of a dead-tree book rather than the far more capable connected information pads of the Schlock universe.
Thanks for trekking to Comic-Con, Howard!

But dead-tree books still exist! What about the Psesah University library? Maybe the Enireth like the feel of paper…

True, but how much actual experience does Kevin have with such artifacts?
I could be misinterpreting the expression on Kevin’s face, I suppose. He might simply be grappling with some new and intriguing concept that he’s reading.
The book doesn’t have a visible title. I wonder whether it’s a cookbook, and he’s trying to decide whether to program a fabber to create a particular dish…
