Howard at Anime Banzai this Friday and Saturday

Posted October 20th, 2008 by Howard Tayler

Anime BanzaiMy last convention appearance of the year will be in downtown Salt Lake City at Anime Banzai this Friday and Saturday. The event is at the Sheraton City Centre Hotel, 150 West 500 South, and promises to be lots of fun.

I’ve booked two full tables in Artist’s Alley, and will have copies of all four Schlock Mercenary books available for sale, as well as Hold On To Your Horses from Sandra and Angela. There will also be magnets, pins, mousemats, and shirts for your consideration.

I do sketches for free, and might just be willing to bang out a commission or two, time permitting. Come on by, say hi, flip through the portfolio, and have fun at Salt Lake City’s largest fan convention (and the biggest Anime convention for several hundred miles in any direction.)

Note that Artist’s Alley closes at 4:00pm on Saturday — I may still be hanging out after that point, but you’ll want to show up on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning if you want to be sure of getting a sketch.

Y’know, not to complain or criticize, but only a REAL Mercenary would charge for sketches, or make someone buy a book before you do a sketch. If I may also suggest, you could even auction off sketches to the teeming hoards milling around your table (or at the end of any panels you may be on), where the highest bidder gets the next sketch. The longer the line, the higher the bid, and repeat this process starting with the next highest bid with those in line (which also gives your sketching arm time to rest.) Any left over requests after the con can pre-pay (including P&H) a flat commission for their sketch to be completed & mailed when it is done (w/color being extra.) These commissions could be given a home on their own webpage, where you can take new orders for commissions! Genius!

Remember: Time = Money! Your past auctions on Ebay support the fact that you are worth far more than free. I think that it is high time that you are recognized as more than a push-over. Besides…

Do you really want Randy Milholland to win the nicest webcomic artist award? He’d never let you live it down!

    Cheers!

Convention economics are not lost on me. When I’m drawing, whether it’s a freebie, or a commission, people usually watch. I then talk to them, and the patter often sells books.

The most I EVER made at a convention doing sketches (I was doing caricatures for about 1/3 what I should have been) was $300. At the end of it my hand was killing me.

But giving away the sketches and charging for books (and sketching in books for free) I’ve made thousands of dollars at conventions, and made far, far more people happy. Also, I spend a lot less time fussing over the details, and my hand feels great at the end of the show.

The day may come when there’s a line ’round the block for Howard Tayler sketches, and my handler will say “it’s now time to raise the price.” That day ain’t here yet.

I forget again, how many other Anime conventions are happening within a couple hundred miles of Salt Lake? ;)

Not related to this post, but I just received my package :-)
Book and magnets in excellent condition. The higher shipping costs were worth it, much better packaging.

The magnets found their home, the guys at work love the laser beam warning ^^

And the bonus strip, great. Explains a lot about schlock (and the writer ;-))

Thanks Howard for another excellent release and a great schlock sketch !

DOH! I’m going to miss out on this one too.
I’m going to have to start a con savings program for next year, they keep falling between paydays.
