New Schlock Community at The Time-Waster’s Guide

Posted January 12th, 2009 by Howard Tayler

My friends from Writing Excuses have generously offered to host a discussion area for me at The Time Waster’s Guide under the “Local Authors” section of the forums. You can find it under my name rather than the name of the comic, which is a subtle yet ambitious statement about how Schlock Mercenary is not the sum total of my creative work.

Right. That Epic Fantasy Trilogy I’ve been meaning to write is still a few years out.

Anyway, there’s a new community to be found under “Howard Tayler.” I’m not removing support for the Nightstar, BLC, or legacy Keenspot forums — I’m just adding one more place where folks can get together and talk about overkill, and the absence thereof.

I should point out that there’s also a Schlock Mercenary Facebook group that I’ve never blogged about, so if you’re already signed up over there the community is ready-made for you.

And speaking of Facebook… if you’re really hard-core, there’s a Howard Tayler Fan Page for you. Well, for ME… but you can use it, and it’s a lot faster than waiting for me to acknowledge a friend request.

Are there online community-type things you’d like to see me doing? Shout out your suggestions below. This is a good year for that since I’m not really planning to go anywhere.

Howard, I don’t know what a seven book serial is called that has’n't missed a day in… ever is called, but Epic springs to mind. I’ve always followed the premise that the story matters more then the medium and you’ve had good stories so far.

    Best regards

    Jake

O I’m sure one of the literary followers will fill my lack of terminology, but they can’t tell the stories can they?

  2. Howard Tayler Says:

You’d probably call it a septology, except that Schlock Mercenary is a ten-book serial… so far.

  3. WulfBYU Says:

I personally wouldn’t mind a Twitter feed. I’d subscribe to it.

  4. Sam Says:

Well, “tri” means three in both Greek and Latin, but “logos” is Greek, and four is a tetralogy, not a quadrilogy, so seven is a heptalogy. (If it was a Latin/Greek hybrid it’d be “septilogy”.)

So far, you’re up to “decalogy”.

Is The Time-Waster’s Guide a guide on how to waste even more time, or a guide for time-wasters on how to stop doing that? I suspect the former, so I’m afraid to look.

Speaking of Books: What’s the title of the Book containing the
Schlocktoberfest where Xinchub’s corpse reanimates? I need to know
what to put on the Hugo Award Nomination ballot.

  6. hswoolve Says:

@csadn: “Sick and Twisted” but that’s just an opinion.
I am frequently surprised and sometimes apalled at the twists and turns Howard’s writing and drawing take. (remember the Zombies of New Orleans fund raising cartoon?)

  7. Howard Tayler Says:

@csadn: It’s called “Schlock Mercenary: The Body Politic”

I think I may put out a Hugo Voter PDF…

@WulfBYU: I have yet to meet the twitter feed that hasn’t destroyed all hope of USEFUL communication, and made all communication spotty and disjointed.

  9. Howard Tayler Says:

@csadn: Okay, Schlock Mercenary: The Body Politic is now available in PDF format for review. Yes, your comment prompted this action on my part…

For some reason the following movie quote just popped into mind:

“You’re a clever man, Gordon — one day it’s going to get you killed.”

I’d suggest you round up a bunch of clever folks and go establish a… what’s the right word, patrol? Outpost! That’s good, a Tagon’s Toughs outpost — in Second Life. Uniforms would be pretty easy, I can make a recommendation for hair, but making Schlock himself would be an interesting challenge to put out there.

(Hint: lots of sculpted primitives and custom animations)

I’d volunteer to help out more, but I’m up to my eyeballs without even having a paying day job yet. :/

Second Life: A way to explore the universe without leaving your chair.

Congratulations on the Hugo nom. :)
