Fan Art: The Ceramic Plasgun
Posted January 23rd, 2006 by Howard TaylerI got some photos, complete with an explanatory email message…
Hi! I’m a fan of Schlock Mercenary, I go by sirgimpofbaath on the Nightstar forums. I made Schlock’s BH-209i in Ceramics class, and although the glaze is chipping, I think it came out rather well. Thanks for the awesome comic.

Thanks, Gavin! These look awesome!

Wow….I nearly jumped out of my chair when I went for my daily fix and saw my humble homage staring back at me…
Thanks for putting it up here.

No problem. I’m glad I was able to startle you. :-)

Hey. It looks almost the right size to serve as a christmas tree ornament.
Coming soon to a Hallmark store near you…
Pretty cool.

neat! Nifty! I work in stained glass….hmm….schlock might be simple enough…nah, people would just ask me why I made a window depicting a pile of poo….
Nice work Gavin!

Hmmm….Sgt wouldn’t work, but you could probably do a nifty tagon, or a ‘main character’ group shot

It’s the size of a Christmas tree ornament, yes, but…it’s about a pound and a half. It’s not hollow.

It’s not hollow? Did you have any problems with the surface clay hardening before the interior when you fired it?

Oooh. Zappity zap zap and “Ominous hummmmmmm” in one convenient ceramic package.
Spiffy work, Gavin.

Unfortunately, stained glass (short of painting) does not lend itself to the details required for recognizable humanoid forms….that’s why Sgt. Schlock came to mind first…..*scratches his head* maybe one of the ships. Postdated check loan might work…*wanders off, pencil in hand, muttering about good intentions and a pile of other patterns that still await glass*

Actually, it’s deceptively”open”. The bottom half has vent-holes all the way through, and the top halfis probably an inch thick at maximum. It’s still heavy, though.

Are you the same Gavin King from Hibernate fame?
If so, wow, you can code AND sculpt.
(Although there are folks who would say that’s one and the same.)

No, my coding is, unfortunately, poor to mediocre at best. So while technically I can code and sculpt, I can do the latter with significantly fewer screw-ups.
