Convention Questions

Posted April 26th, 2006 by Howard Tayler

I’ve gotten a spate of “when are you coming this way?” questions. My convention schedule can be found at the bottom of the Schlock Mercenary front page. You can also find it here.

If you’re wondering what it takes to get me to your favorite convention, check out this page.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled web-surfing.

I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but one of your ad company’s has added some script that works around Firefox’s popup blocking by initiating an “Open File With..” prompt. It’s extremely annoying, and if it continues, I’m afraid I won’t be visiting this site anymore. That would be a pity, as I love your comic, and am considering buying your book.

  2. John Bowen Says:

I looked at it closer, it’s a Google syndication ad.

  3. Howard Tayler Says:

Give me the URL for the advertiser and I’ll happily block it. Note, however, that nobody else has complained… this indicates that the popup may be due to spyware or adware on your PC, rather than anything malicious in my sponsors’ ads.

    Not coming to Fandemonium?

Just wondering as that I know you’ve got family in the area and although I live 5 minutes from the Idaho center, you are the only thing that would get me there.

  5. Robert Says:

    Woops…

15 minutes from the Nampa Civic center.

Hmm I just might be able to make it to the San Deigo Con, here’s hoping.

I’ve noticed no popups in IE 6.0.2800.1106.
Mind you, I can’t read the comic in FireFox at home, (flashplayer not installed), but that’s a minor quibble.

  8. John Bowen Says:

Well, I dunno about adware/spyware, since it only happens on this website, and it seems to have stopped happening since last night. Maybe Google got wind of one of their syndicates pulling this crap and put a stop to it? Dunno. Anyway, I’m running Ad-Aware SE and Spybot Search and Destroy, just to check on things.

I’m currently using Firefox 1.5.0.2, and I’ve never seen a popup on Schlock.

Also, I don’t think you need flash to read Schlock. There’s a flash applet in the top-right corner linking to other Blank Label comics, but last time I looked without flash Firefox just put a warning across the top about not all content being visible without installing the plugin. I didn’t notice anything missing except the blank label. The cartoon’s still visible (it’s a .png referred to by an IMG tag, so any browser recent enough to support PNG will show it, no plugins needed), and the calendar for navigating the archives is just a table of links.

    Robert:
We are not planning to come to Fandemonium this year. It conflicts with some other events. Fandemonium is under consideration for 2007.
