Will Those Responsible Please Step Forward?

Posted November 20th, 2006 by Howard Tayler

Schlocker Hilary B. attended Philcon last weekend, and sent me photos of the Serial Peacemaker, rendered in Legos. Hilary didn’t say who did the rendering because he didn’t know.

  1. Nentuaby Says:

Oh my lord… I don’t know who did those either, but I want to have babies with whoever created them. I like the other ships, too- I see the Qin Shihuangdi and an Honorverse hammerhead. :-D

  2. Sam Says:

Nentuaby: Are you hoping the artist is of a particular gender, or are you so enthusiastic you don’t care whether it’s biologically possible?

  3. Nentuaby Says:

As any mad scientist can tell you, biological possibility is more of a… Loose guideline. ;)

  4. bizzybody Says:

More! More! I want to see more! (Especially the Honorverse ship!)

  5. Joreal Says:

I’d really like to see the Kitesfear meself. Nice work though.

  6. Ryan Dobie Says:

I want to know when we can expect a Schlock-themed LEGO set. I’d buy that before I’d buy a Star Wars LEGO set.

  7. se5a Says:

at a guess, I would say it was done by “Phillip Thorne”
to quote Jon from MOS (http://www.project-apollo.net/mos/index.html)

“Anyway, Mark and I attended Philcon this past weekend. We got to see a copy of the battleship Qin done in LEGO blocks by Phillip Thorne and we got to talk to a lot of very nice people who read and enjoy our comic. I had to moderate three discussion panels because the moderators showed up late or not at all, which was very amusing…for me, at least.”

in the first shot above you can see the Qin it the top left.
link to a picture of the Qin (in MOS) http://www.project-apollo.net/mos/mos230.html

so if the same guy did all those ships in the photo, then I’m placing my moneys on Phillip Thorne…
is there a prize for being right? ;-)

  8. pippin Says:

Over on A Miracle of Science (http://project-apollo.net/mos/) they mentioned a LEGO model of the battleship Qin being made at Philcon by Phillip Thorne. Possibly the Serial Peacemaker was made by the same guy?

  9. NPC Says:

According to Jon of A Miracle of Science, the Lego Battleship Quin was done by Phillip Thorne. Perhaps the Serial Peacemaker was done by the same person?

  10. bizzybody Says:

Check out http://project-apollo.net/mos/index.html and you’ll read; “Anyway, Mark and I attended Philcon this past weekend. We got to see a copy of the battleship Qin done in LEGO blocks by Phillip Thorne and we got to talk to a lot of very nice people who read and enjoy our comic.”

So Howard, one Phillip Thorne is the culpr… errrr, artist responsible for the LEGO ‘Serial Peacemaker’.

I’ve started reading that webcomic, it’s very good!

  11. Black Wolff Says:

I’ll echo the two comments above that I’d love to see more. I love LEGOs and those custom ships are especially cool. The Honorverse ship I’d like to see more of, but even in the current view it is good. And the Serial Peacemaker is quite nice. I wonder if the creator would sell pieces and/or instructions for these ships… Hmm….

  12. SteveW Says:

Is that the LIBERATOR from BLAKES 7 off the starboard bow of the SP, to the port of the Harrington ship?

  13. hida_dragonbane Says:

according to the philcon.org website, Mr. Phillip Thorne was present in the capacity of Assistant Webmaster, Children’s Programming, LEGO-related programming, and the LEGO construction area coordinator. He may still be reachable at kids2006@philcon.org which was his listed contact address for philcon. If not, you should probably nose around at http://www.psfs.org/ which was the organization that ran Philcon.

  14. Howard Tayler Says:

Thanks, hida_dragonbane. I’ve emailed that address. Hopefully I’ll hear from him.

    –Howard

  15. Psychosomatic Says:

I’d be really impressed to see a Lego White Star. [ahem]

By the way, no new Blast Off! pics to put up, because I haven’t been to the range [whimper].

  16. dargon Says:

Am I the only one who is (not so) subtly reminded of the webcomic Legostar Galactica?

  17. haesslich Says:

Well, he’s the coordinator – but that doesnt’ mean he BUILT everything. It does mean he probably knows who’s responsible for the SP, however.

  18. zippthorne Says:

Those of you who want to see a SM theme set, I’d like to point out that lego has a free CAD tool for designing projects which keeps track of pieces used. You can then order the exact set you need for your project.

  19. LastAmorphStanding Says:

…. aaaand speaking of which, I’ve been playing around since seeing this, and apart from the minitanks (which are just too small and complex for me to reverse-engineer from the pics), I think I have a basically-complete MLCAD setup of the Serial Peacemaker as shown above.

Only question now, really, is the best way to publish the parts list and suggested build steps.

  20. Howard Tayler Says:

LastAmorphStanding — pass me the files and I’ll host ‘em here. That’s EASY.

    –Howard

  21. VikedaL Says:

What’d you expect? It’s a model of the SP. Of course he’d host `em :P

  22. Lomgren Says:

Looking at it, I could probably make up a minitank from the pictures. I’m also a Lego fan, so let me take a look at MLCad and see what I can come up with. And I do have some experience with Legos… I was at Comic-Con with a 4 foot long sword made of them. *grins*

  23. Carnildo Says:

I’ve figured out the minitanks. It’s not that hard, really.

  24. dargon Says:

Yeah, there’s some specialty elements from what looks like one of the dinosaur sets, but those aren’t hard sets to find. From what I can see the rest are pretty standard elements.

  25. jj42 Says:

Been playing very little with the Lego software, but I am fairly confident you can send the drawings to Lego and order a set with the right blocks and printed instructions. Lego would even look at your set and consider production if they think it would sell.

Mind you, this info is only from me being fairly confident having read that off the Lego site for the software.

  26. Jordanis Says:

jj42- The trouble with the Lego Digital Designer is that the parts list is fairly limited as yet. I’ve made a couple basic air-car type things and had them mailed to me, but the parts list is really restrictive still.

That aside, I really want to see plans for the SP, and if a reliable contact for this guy can be found, I’d love to find somewhere with better pictures for that Weberverse ship. That one looks like a beauty too.

  27. bizzybody Says:

Something weird is with this board. When I posted the URL to and quote from MOS, nobody else had yet. How’d all those others get timestamped _earlier_? If someone else already had, I wouldn’t have bothered with repeating the info. The ‘earlier’ posts weren’t there after the board refreshed after I posted.

Is this board using the poster’s computer’s clock or its own clock?

  28. bizzybody Says:

and no, I don’t care about looking like repeating info, I’m just curious about some of the inner workings of this board software

  29. McNutcase Says:

bizzybody: at a guess, the earlier posts were made earlier but held in the moderation queue for Howard to check, and so didn’t appear until later. Everyone’s first post here is subject to that, as an anti-spam measure – but it can lead to little weirdnesses such as you’ve described.

  30. Chigy87 Says:

    @Lomgren:
Must have been heavily reinforced. I tried to make one a whole lot of years ago but i didnt make it strong enough, i picked it up and it snapped 2 of the long 2 by 12 strips… oh well, still have 29.998 more pieces left.

    @Howard:
My mom just called me downstairs that there was a package for me, I come down just in time to see both books being confiscated by her for my christmas present…
Sure, it means I dont have to pay her back but now I’ll have to wait a while to finally read them

  31. dakko Says:

Having a look at the http://www.psfs.org/ site I note that the display was the work of http://www.delvalug.org/

If you look at the latter site, you find a gallery of work by the members, including the aforementioned Phillip Thorne.

Another member, Cale Leiphart has a *great* model of a Shay locomotive done in LEGO – see photos at http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=214997

Black Wolff wants to see more? He could spend hours looking at the gallery entries! I did… }=o)>

  32. Chigy87 Says:

By the way, good thing you put cardboard sheets on either side of the books, the mailer was slightly torn at the top edge but the books were in perfect condition

  33. dakko Says:

Whoops! Credit where credit is due: The Shay was the work of Roy Cook – Cale’s work was just the last I was looking at.

  34. Lomgren Says:

    @Chigy87:
Well, I built it as a 6 wide blade, with a 4 by and a 2 by strip going both ways to reinforce it. I have a picture of it up on brickshelf, username Lomgren, if you are curious.

Also, I’m curious about the comment system here, as this is the first time I tried to use it. I tried posting the pieces needed for the minitank here, with links to bricklink pictures to show what I was talking about, but maybe it wasn’t allowed because I put the same information in the forums?

  35. Howard Tayler Says:

Lomgren: The comment system here is pretty straightforward — you register, you can post. Your first comment will be held in the moderation queue until I read it and approve it, but after that you’re home free.

    –Howard

  36. MadMike Says:

Why does the SP remind me of a STRETCHER?:)

  37. Lomgren Says:

Maybe my comment didn’t make it through then… I thought for sure I had hit “Submit Comment” at the end. Thanks for the explanation.

  38. DemiIncarnate Says:

It could be Philip Thorne – that was who constructed the Lego Qin Shihuangdi next to the SP, according to http://www.project-apollo.net/mos/index.html

  39. Weldun Says:

Any news from Mr. Thorne? Anyone?

  40. hida_dragonbane Says:

I’m sure Mr. Taylor will give us a News Update rather than a side comment if he actually tracks the creator down. Besides, he still needs to post the CAD drawing, and that would be a great double-task post.

  41. Redclaws Says:

Did anyone notice the Liberator from Blakes 7 – A white one and possibly a black one as well.

For us brits that’s a cool piece of nostalgia. Do you get Blakes 7 in Utah?

Terry Nation rules the world. At least in this dimension anyway.

  42. Parzival Says:

Anyone besides me notice that the Serial Peacemaker appears to be the target of every ship around it? That sort of thing seems to happen a lot to the Toughs… ;-)

  43. Nentuaby Says:

    Hmmm… You’re right, Parzival

And I’d hate to be targeted by the Qin!
