Booked for 2008…

Posted August 15th, 2007 by Howard Tayler

A very polite gentleman named Luke emailed me today to invite me to a convention in May of 2008. I replied with my regrets. I try to keep my travel schedule such that I only attend one event per month, and I leave November, December, and January completely free from travel, May, as it turned out, already had two events in it (though Free Comic Book Day shouldn’t really count.)

After sending that message I checked and realized that I hadn’t updated my “Convention and Appearance Schedule” page in a while. That page, and the list at the bottom of the home page at schlockmercenary.com were both badly out of date.

Sandra sat with me as I began updating, and she notified me that I was, in no uncertain terms, booked solid. Oh, I might be able to squeeze something into February of ‘08, and perhaps something could fit into October of that year, but if 2007 has taught us anything it’s that I need time at home to crank out books. (She scowled at me when I typed the words “squeeze” and “perhaps.”)

So… if you’re hoping to invite me to your event (and I love such invitations), please heed the examples of the folks with Ad Astra and LepreCon, and plan at least 18 months in advance.

I’m very glad that you accepted all those months ago for LepreCon!We had been trying to get you down here for some time. Luckily the Chair for ‘08 thinks you are even more of a genius than we do.

Cbullock: Well then, I suppose the pressure is on! Not only must I bring my “A” game (which I always do), but I must go that extra mile to convince the rest of you that I’m every bit the genius your Chair thinks me to be.

Fortunately I specialize in creating believable fictions.

I notice you haven’t listed LTUE or CONDuit for 2008???? Don’t make me drive down there and get you!

  4. Howard Tayler Says:

Kevin: Well… I’m not sure I’ll be going. I might drop in for a spell, but I can’t commit to anything just now. It’s not that I don’t like these events — I love ‘em! I just don’t know whether I’ll have time this coming year.

    Howard,

It would seem that your April is conspicuously empty at this point. We just might have to drag you (kicking and screaming, I know) back to Penguicon for yet ANOTHER appearance.

  6. Jay Maynard Says:

mightyix, if you need help dragging Howard to Penguicon, let me know.

    Errata…

Sandra just told me that I need to attend LTUE, because it’s the event where I “warm up” for everything else, and get back in touch with all my friends.

(The fact that Orson Scott Card is going to be there has nothing to do with it, I’m sure.)

mightyix: my nigh-traditional Penguicon attendance is the most regrettable casualty of my full schedule. With two events in March and two in May, I need the four weeks at home in April to take care of business. These comics don’t draw themselves (though I know they often look like they tried to.)

What are you complaining about? You’ll see me at Mountain-Con in six weeks!

  8. Jay Maynard Says:

    AIE!!!!!!!!

He might see you at Mountain-Con, but I won’t…

  9. Greyscribe Says:

I see that Comic-Con 2008 is a lock. Excellent! I have already purchased my membership and will see you there. You’ll see me too, I’m certain, because I will have money in hand.

I might even part with some.

Aw, what’m I saying? Of course I will. After all, Schlock Mercenary is the number-one link on my list of daily reading.

Hmmm…. I think I might have buy LepreCon tickets… if nothing else to get my books vandalized.

  11. Cbullock Says:

    jecook:
Please do! The more the merry!

Hmmm, not making plans to come back to AKon next year, Howard? Means I might have to drive down to Chimeracon instead….
