Cameo over at Something Positive
Posted November 7th, 2007 by Howard Tayler
While Jeph Jacques, Rich Stevens, and I have never been on the same panel of cosplay judges, I think Randy Milholland has captured the outcome of such an event with this installment of Something Positive.
Oh, dear. Just thinking about this strip has brought back some… um… touching memories.

You seem to be handling the pain better than Rich and Jeph. :D

Hmph.

For the record, Jay, I only have the fondest of memories for YOUR costumes.
Mostly I’m remembering this one time the Tolkien elf looked more like a 300lb half-orc. Oh, and the time we watched a fursuited wolf do “I’m in a maze” pantomime for five minutes straight…

Oh, I know…just had to give you a hard time.

Touching memories? Who was touching what?

Yeah, you went there. THANK YOU.

You left the trail of bread crumbs. . . So somebody had to.

The worst I recall was some older, plain woman in metallic chiffon and fairy wings, allegedly costumed as an “alien” of some kind, who went running around the stage shouting, “A gift from my people to yours!” while throwing handfuls of glitter from a basket.
She turned across the front of the stage, then back along the far side…straight toward the OPEN BACKS of the audiovisual equipment…while two techs waved hands and screamed, “Nooooooooo!” in SF slo-mo.
Yup. Handful of metallic glitter straight into the gear. Amazingly, nothing arced or shorted.
She cleared the stage and was rewarded with Dead. Silence.

Hmm, guess I shouldn’t ask you about judging at Ad Astra’s masquerade ;)
I’m a big supporter of costumers, I’ve worn some simple hall costumes and volunteer at many masquerades helping out backstage. I love to watch masquerades and am awed by the creativity and talent I see in the fan community.
That being said, sometimes I still need to avert my eyes. :) People like the guy I saw wearing a squid and a thong still baffle me.

Chani: I would be more than happy to judge. I love costuming, and have a deep appreciation for what goes into a good cosplay.
I also have some lasting memories for what goes into a not-so-good cosplay. All personal expression is not created equal. :-)

The horror, The absolute HORROR!!!
My eyes too would bleed.

I’ve been to gaming conventions. I can only imagine the horrors that Howard has witnessed…
My “favorite” was the fat hairy dude dressed up like one of the sailor scouts from Sailor Moon…
It made my soul weep…

“That being said, sometimes I still need to avert my eyes. :) People like the guy I saw wearing a squid and a thong still baffle me.”
My mind went blind at that thought.

swj719, were you referring to Sailor Bubba by any change? (google it, if you dare!)
for a couple years I was the historian/roving photographer at the local anime convention. I saw some good costumes, and some… not so good.
*reminds self to get tickets for Leprecon, and a few other things*

I read that as “wearing a squid AS a thong”. I’m not sure the real version is any worse…

Daang. I know the guy doing Sailor Bubba.

Perhaps the fact that Ad Astra is in Canada in March will keep some of the excesses — or lack of excesses — to a minimum?

I know a guy who at one point yelled out at a con across the room: “YOU! You there! You have the most amazing boobs I have ever seen!! Yes, you sir! Those are magnificent!!!”
I guess it was his way of trying to stem the tide, I guess…

Well, I just finished the Something Positive archive.
Enjoyed it, though definately not family friendly.
