Howard on BlogTV Saturday at Noon Eastern

I’m in Toronto at Ad Astra, and you are probably not. But you’d LIKE to be, right? Here’s your chance to “meet” me and actually interact with me.

“Crazy Kyla” has a BlogTV.com channel at http://www.blogtv.com/People/Crazy_Kyla, and she’s interviewing Ad Astra guests. On Saturday at 12:00 noon Eastern time, I’ll be on camera live. If you log in, you can ask questions of the interviewers, and I can respond on camera.

Life in the 21st Century… so cool! We haven’t had a breakthrough like this since radio stations installed telephones and started prank-calling on the air.

Seriously, I have NO idea how well this is going to be pulled off. I suspect there may be an atmosphere of amateurism, but I’m going to give it a shot, and we’re going to have fun.

now you’re gonna be a big blogTV star? Wow. Can I have your video, mister?

Even though the meeting planner at http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/meeting.html tells me that 12 noon in Toronto is 1 AM Sunday morning here in Japan, that’s very cool. I keep nagging at convention organizers to put more stuff online during the convention, but most of them seem to think the only use for their website is beforehand. Will the interview be available afterward? (Okay, I’ll go look at the site). Thanks for letting us know –

    Saturday?

    Check.

    10:00 Mountain == 12:00 Eastern?

    Check.

    M’kay, I’m clueless.

  3. Dev Dot Nul Says:

Ah, there you are. Unscheduled and all!

    Worked great. Wow. Technology WORKING.

    Robot apocalypse is ever closer.

  5. Dev Dot Nul Says:

Thanks, Howard. The podling loved seeing you.

For the two or three who missed it, it’s been archived here.

The implicit invitation to your stalkers was fun.

    Robot apocalypse?

Hi Howard, I wanted to thank you (publiclly) for taking time to talk with me, and all your efforts. I am sure that my friend will enjoy his new artwork. Hope you enjoyed your visit to Toronto.

Just so all you out there know, the Taylers are every bit as nice as you probably think they are (as long as you assume they are really nice people). If they happen to be at a convention of some sort in YOUR home town, make the effort to go see!

Sorry Howard, I was all there and ready, exactly 24 hours late! :) And yes, for those who asked the video is available online under Kyla’s “Identity Toronto,” #17 I believe. Mostly things I’d read before, but nice to actually see you talking about them, you’re a good speaker.

  9. mbarker Says:

Thanks to you (and to Kyla) for bringing us that. It was fun to hear that your passion in life is cartooning, and that it all started when you told Sandra that you were going to take up doodling as a living.

I liked the description of Schlock Mercenary as a comic set in the far flung future, with mercenaries who hurt people and break things for money. Also the identification of the genre as satire.

Oh, and skipping ahead - nice to hear that your comic influences are Bloom County and Calvin and Hobbes, while the science fiction side pays dues to Niven, Brinn, Bujold, and recently David Weber and David Drake. How much do they charge, incidentally?

    Again, thanks!

Took me a while to get to the video yesterday, but once I did I rather enjoyed it. My wife, who was half listening, actually giggled at the 500 lb. cow-pattie line.
I guess I should have checked here and followed Dev Dot Nul’s link. Would have saved me a half hour of searching.
Boy, sometimes for someone who considers them self a techie, I suck. I should probably turn my Geek Card back in.

In Australia, the interview was early in the morning, so I had to resort to using the archive. Ack. Slow to download, and then it stops about five minutes in. Today I tried again, and this time I noticed the download link. That worked, sorta. I received about five or six times the amount of data as the size of the file, and when I played it, less than half way through the the sound got so out of sync with the video that it might as well have been BlogRadio.

On the bright side, at this rate the robot apocalypse should be easily defeated. Unless it’s hosted on YouTube, anyway. Then we’ll all be rickrolled to death.

Dev Dot Nul: You mean the implicit “make my day, punk”? I suppose that’s an invitation.

My favourite bit was when Howard realised he was doing some really really bad marketing and he shouldn’t do that.

  12. Dev Dot Nul Says:

The whole thing was fun. I got a grin out of the “make my day” bit, picturing chez Tayler with the walk bordered by a thousand heads on spikes. Does that make me a bad person?

    Just an ordinary cynical creep?

    Both?

The best part was the podling’s (my son) reaction; he loved the entire interview but about halfway in, finally got it that Howard was sitting in Toronto and talking RIGHT NOW! He even took over the keyboard once the taped portion of interview was over and sent a bunch of hearts to Howard. Guess I’m going to have to put a webcam on his computer so we can video conference across the house to get him used to the concept.

If you’re still having troubles getting the whole thing, let me know and I can email the interview to you, assuming that doesn’t pillage and burn someone’s copyright.

  13. Sam Says:

No, I eventually got the whole thing (it’s only the embedded player that keeps losing the connection – the download worked once I noticed it, just horribly inefficiently), it’s just that the last half-and-a-bit is stupidly out of sync. Is it just the MOV version that’s like that? I downloaded that one because it said that’s the one to get if you’re using a Mac, but I can play WMVs too. On the other hand, now that I’ve heard and seen the interview (though not quite at the same time) I don’t really want to download it again.

  14. Howard Tayler Says:

@Dev Dot Nul - I got the hearts. Thanky!

  15. Dev Dot Nul Says:

Kiddo says “You’re welcome!” Howard. He totally tripped on seeing you and being able to communicate from the comfort of my #2 laptop, in REAL TIME! That interview has given me such a marvelous springboard for teaching him about all sorts of techie things that I’m frankly puzzled how to best exploit it.

@Sam Beats me, I saw it streaming without any problems but the UnPlug plugin for Firefox does such a great job of parsing out where the videos are hiding I just assumed I could snag it for you.

  16. Sam Says:

Safari’s activity window shows the URLs of everything in the page, including the video (which is very convenient if I want to grab a copy of something on YouTube), but the BlogTV plugin uses something that claims to be an FLV, but doesn’t work as one (actually, it seems to tickle a bug in my FLV codec that I’ve never seen with any other video). And it only partially downloads, which is probably why the plugin doesn’t work properly. The weird thing is that it looks like a successful download, but of a smaller file than it said it would be.

Whatever. I downloaded it, listened to it, enjoyed it. I can’t be bothered diagnosing the problems of every 5173 on teh intarwebz.

  17. Dev Dot Nul Says:

    Amen, bro.
