I Am Now A Bradley Schenck Fan

Posted May 22nd, 2008 by Howard Tayler

The Retropolis Transit Authority, by Bradley SchenckI don’t usually plug stuff I’m being paid to run ads for, but I LOVE the designs over at Retropolis Transit Authority. Visually, these things are a dream come true — literally, they are the future-dreaming of the 1930s-era scientifiction set.

My only regret is that I can’t afford to buy swag for myself right now. (Okay, my REAL regret is that I didn’t twig to this uchronic design years ago, and fill the Schlockiverse with it.)

Even if you’re not shopping, go have a look at Bradley Schenck’s work. It’s gorgeous.

Oh good lord, his stuff is awesome. All of it. I must have it! I know a couple other people who really need these designs in their collections, too. Thanks for the linkage!

    Tasty!

    Thanks for the pointer!

Those are GORGEOUS. I am currently sitting here, staring at a hundred-and-ninety-dollar shopping cart, wondering where in the world I’m going to come up with enough money to click “proceed to checkout” … and I usually _hate_ shopping for clothes!!

Agreed, agreed, agreed. I noticed the PW ad for them (Girl Genius is another of my guilty pleasures) and just about drooled.

I just found out about this a couple of weeks ago…. my fiancee got me the Klaatu Barada Nikto T-shirt for our anniversary.

    Howdy! New reader, big fan.
I found that Retropolis site a while back, and I proudly sport the Space Pirate (with the blasters) shirt whenever I can. It really speaks volumes about my personality.
Anyway, I also want to say thanks for this comic! You have inspired me to take the final steps in my own venture. Keep up the stellar work, your doing a wonderful job!

Babe! Come on! - the answer is obvious.
    Start a second comic.
Instant readership … You know you want to… ;)

    *SIGH*

I don’t wear T-shirts…but damn, some of those designs would look good on the back of a bomber jacket…

Be sure to check out his non-clothing shop where you can buy posters, gift boxes, mugs, etc. The posters of his art are better than some of his t-shirts I think:

Oddly, I couldn’t find an easy link between his t-shirts or blog to his poster shop. That’s why I’m posting it here.

cartoon-gal: I don’t think Howard has time to do two comics.

Howard: Perhaps one of the civilisations we haven’t seen yet designs their stuff that way? Or maybe those designs might be about to come back into fashion?

Of course, as well as the design of the technology, there’s also a difference there in the art style. You’ve already gone from bad to what you self-deprecatingly call “marginally less bad”. I don’t think people would mind another art upgrade if you feel up to it. Then again, it looks more time-consuming, so I’m not pushing for that.

Oh, and is there a missing “a” between “that” and “weapon” in the second panel of today’s comic, or am I misreading it? I suppose the “that” could be an adjective modifying “weapon”, but in that case there’s an elided “that” just before it (i.e. “know [that] that weapon…”), which is grammatically acceptable, but confusing (particularly considering where the line-break happens to fall).

We’ve had a similar discussion before, about something I wrote. I hope you didn’t catch it from me.

I used to work with Brad back in my days at Taldren. (Game studio responsible for the Starfleet Command series of PC games) If you want to see more of his work in an interactive setting, be sure to check out his previous work. He’s a great guy and a great artist.

    Fixed.

And today’s comic makes me think of this.
