By request, a desktop background…

Posted May 28th, 2008 by Howard Tayler

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these. DJ Delorie on the Nightstar forum demanded a desktop background from today’s strip, and (as is rarely the case) it was fairly easy to format it. Of course it was also very tedious since my upgrade to Photoshop CS3 ate the macros I’d created for automating this stuff.

The desktops are available in three aspect ratios and several resolutions, shown below:

  • 4:3

  • 5:4

  • Cinema (1.6:1)

You can use the Donate button under this comic (assuming the footnote is showing up properly) or the recently re-enabled “Tip the Cartoonist” button on the left-hand side of the site.

OK, someone’s gotta make a Schlock Mercenary movie! Schlock flying through the air is a damn sight more entertaining than Iron Man doing the same thing!

  2. WickedWolfie Says:

Except he would jiggle more than a 500 pound shut-in doing the macarena. Warning: Do not watch this movie while eating.

  3. WEKM Says:

Darn you payday! Why must you make me wait for the Schlocky goodness.

  4. Psychosomatic Says:

Hey! A man after my own heart! Yeee-hah!

  5. EnOne Says:

can you get the picture without the Yeee-HAH! ?

Schlock doing ANYTHING damn sight more entertaining!

    SHLOCK: The Movie!

What’s Shrek got that the Sargeant don’t?

  7. ryos Says:

Thanks Howard! Schlock has officially displaced Mario on my desktop.

For the mathematically challenged (does the mathematically-challenged Schlock reader actually exist?), if you have a widescreen (16:10) monitor, you want the Cinematic 1.6:1 version.

Howard, I really was liking how the story was going, how you fit the super awesome power armor into the story, and then Schlock dual wields two plasma cannons in rocket mode. You are really on your game this month.

  9. ryos Says:

P.S. If you use Mac OS X 10.5, you’ll find that the top of Schlock’s speech bubble is under the menu bar, which looks awful. Luckily I grabbed the big version, so I can do a custom crop that better fits the Mac environment.

@EnOne: I’m sorry, the text is part of the line-art layers, and I color around the lines, not through them. Dropping it out would mean re-coloring the background — not a huge task, but it would definitely mean another two hours of image prep to get all those resolutions done.

Short answer: It’s possible, but I have other things to work on now.

  11. WEKM Says:

Right now, I’m trying to crop it for my PDA Phone.

Looks AWESOME on my desktop right now. As soon as I have it on my phone too, my life will be totally Schlock-synced.

  12. EnOne Says:

@Howard Tayler: That’s ok, I didn’t know if it was part of the picture or a layer on top of the picture.

  13. Howard Tayler Says:

@WEKM If you’ll tell me what resolution your phone uses (if ANYBODY can tell me that!) I’ll include that in future cuts of desktops.

  14. WEKM Says:

    320×240
    240×320

because my phone does both landscape and portrait
