The Day Schlockers Saw The Earth Stand Still

Posted December 11th, 2008 by Howard Tayler

The Day The Earth Stood StillThis Friday at 1:55pm there is a showing of “The Day The Earth Stood Still” here in Utah at the Cinemark Theaters in Provo Towne Centre. This particular showing has been rented out by my good friend Richard Bliss, courtesy of GWAVA, and he is offering 100 tickets to Schlock fans, pretty much by virtue of the fact that he likes me, and figures he’ll like you, too.

It’s short notice, and it’s in the middle of the day. But it’s FREE.

Go to etouches.com/still and enter the promotional code “schlock” to get yourself registered. You will also need to provide contact information, but I trust Richard and GWAVA not to abuse nor re-sell this. They might re-sell it to ME, but hey… you and I will be seeing a movie together, so it’s okay, right?

There are only 100 open slots, so don’t delay. Oh, and the movie is tomorrow, so, you know… don’t delay.

See you there!

  1. Richard Says:

We only have one promotional code for this movie and it is schlock. By putting this promotion code in when you register, we will filter out all of the Schlock fans and they will not be entered into our database.

I will be giving the names of the Schlock fans to Howard.

I will PROBABLY be hosting private screenings of the following movies in 2009 and will provide Howard with a number of tickets to his fans.

Here are a few of the movies on the list:

Watchmen March 2009 – 90% sure, will be at the Gateway Theaters in SLC March 8th

    X-Men:Origins – May 1st – Provo Cinemark

Star Trek May 8th – Provo Cinemark (Have to choose between X-Men and Star Trek)

Transformers June 26th – Provo Cinemark

And then a personal favorite LAND OF THE LOST June 5th

Dang! Company party at noon tomorrow. Otherwise I would jump.

Oh. My vote is Star Trek. Would totally call in sick :)

    Everyone have fun!

  3. Richard Bliss Says:

I’ll give you more lead time when we do Star Trek.

My last class of the semester is at the same time tomorrow. Otherwise, the drive down from SLC would be well worth it.

Depending on how much notice you give and the time, I would enjoy seeing Watchmen with other Schlock fans, especially if I can just take the TRAX there.

My vote would also be for Star Trek: That would be a fun way to celebrate the end of yet another semester and a belated birthday (May 6th).

Every year for the past five years I have hosted a movie viewing during Novell BrainShare in Salt Lake City. A couple of vendors usually step up and participate, including GWAVA, GroupLink, and BrainStorm, all of which are Novell partners and vendors.

The movies we have had private screenings for at BrainShare have been:

    Analyze This
    Hidalgo
    International Space Station – IMAX
Apollo program – Can’t remember the name at the moment also in IMAX
    Adrenaline Rush – IMAX

Also, on occasion, in Provo, I arrange private screenings for Novell employees through the same sponsors. This past year was the first time we actually did a private prescreening. That was The Dark Knight. We showed it the day before it was released to the public.

Seldom do we fill the entire theater and Howard is always invited. This next year we will make sure to set aside some tickets for his True Fans. You have been good to him and as his friend, I want to say thank you to all of you as well.

I registered for myself and my wife (if she can sneak off work)–thanks, Richard and Howard!

What would we need to bring to the theater to slip past the guards at the gate? The reference number? Or do we just drop a name or two?

  7. Howard Tayler Says:

Reference number helps, but your names will do fine. They’re on the list!

  8. Richard Bliss Says:

You are part of the Novell GroupWise 8 party. We are testing the 6 degrees of Separation. You read Schlock, Howard writes Schlock, Howard used to do GroupWise, Howard knows Richard.

Look, it doesn’t even take six steps.

  9. bch36 Says:

Thanks again, guys. My wife’s reaction when I IM’d her was “!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HOLY CRAP YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Apparently she’s been looking forward to this movie.

  10. Hephaestus Says:

Were there any chance of me seeing this movie with ya’ll tomorrow and still being back at work in Dallas by 5, I would totally do it.

Maybe next time I can get enough notice/vacation time to get out there.

  11. gunner Says:

i’d love to be there with you all, but there’s a slight geography problem. no worries, have fun.
    “gunner”

  12. WEKM Says:

    First off, Richard, YOU ROCK!
Second, danm my job, I am going to be out on a shot.
Third, If warning is given, I will totally get the day off for Star Trek. No way am I missing out on that one.

  13. Richard Bliss Says:

We’ve done these movies before in the afternoon, like around 430pm, but on a Friday, taking time off from family to go see the movie seems to always be much harder than taking time off from work to go see a movie.

Watch this space and I will keep you updated on Star Trek. May seems so long from now.

  14. hmoulding Says:

Like the story so far, Howard. Just a little typo in Friday’s strip: when you “augur,” you’re predicting the future. When you bore into a building with a fast and massive object, leaving a messy trail of destruction, you’d call that “auger.”

Of course, Sgt Schlock may be auguring that the shuttle is going to auger into a building…

Hey, and no need to thank me. My spelling skills are rapidly declining due to age or something, so I share them around while I still have some.

  15. Fiirvoen Says:

Aww, crap. Didn’t find out until I was already at work this morning! Otherwise, I’d have tried to convince my wife to take the road trip!

  16. Howard Tayler Says:

Good catch, Helge. Now, are you coming to the movie? I mean, if you enjoyed correcting my spelling of “auger” certainly you’ve got to be just GIDDY about watching Keanu Reeves woodenly remake a part originally woodenly acted…

  17. Alan Bahr Says:

Ah, the detrimental effects of holding down a full time job. I would be there in a heart beat any other day (meaning Saturday or Sunday)

  18. bch36 Says:

Great movie! Thanks again, Howard and Richard! I brought a couple friends as well, and we all enjoyed! (And they all asked what Schlock Mercenary was about….not so much GWAVA–sorry, Richard.)
