Build Your Own Serial Peacemaker

Posted December 1st, 2006 by Howard Tayler

Those responsible for the PhilCon appearance of Schlock Mercenary’s Serial Peacemaker in lego form have yet to own up to their work. In the meantime, however, a like-minded Schlocker, “Last Amorph Standing” has reverse-engineered the process for the benefit of the rest of us.

Pretend, for a moment, that you are Christmas shopping, and you see something like this on the cover of the box.

The Serial Peacemaker, reverse-engineered by Last Amorph Standing and rendered by NickersonM

What would be in the box? Well, you’d find instructions, and some nifty blocks. I am told that an abbreviated set of those instructions, as well as a list of the blocks required, can be found in “serialpeacemaker.ldr.” All you need to read it is “Mike’s Lego CAD” and the LDraw parts library.

So there it is. With the help of “LastAmorphStanding” and “NickersonM” (who rendered the picture above) you now have everything you need to build it yourself. There’s a discussion thread here on the subject.

What downloads is a zipped web page that you have to rename and open in your browser. That takes you to the annoying downlaod site.

For mac users, Bricksmith, http://bricksmith.sourceforge.net/ will work fine to open the ldraw file.

How do I acquire this in such a way that you get some of the money?

I mean at least the legos ¬_¬

  3. Howard Tayler Says:

danacarson: Sorry about that! I think I’ve fixed the problem now. Check and let us know?

Hukuma: I can’t think of a way to do that, unless you decide to buy your legos from Amazon on a shopping trip that began from a Schlock link. Don’t worry about it.

  4. swj719 Says:

Howard, if you find a way to get this in your store, I’m so buying it…

    And then the $2000 DPCL… I want Petey…

  5. only1doug Says:

there is a official Lego CAD type program, http://factory.lego.com/default.aspx which you can send them your designs and they will send you all the pieces, in a box, with your chosen artwork on it.

  6. only1doug Says:

sorry howard, correct link was http://ldd.lego.com/download/

  7. Parzival Says:

I wonder if you used the Lego CAD system to design it, if you could do a bulk buy with Lego and then sell the things yourself for a profit? Of course, that initial Lego bulk buy might be prohibitive…

  8. Howard Tayler Says:

Parzival: Not a bad idea. Not exactly ‘low-hanging fruit,’ but it still might be worth looking into.

i played a bit with the lego designer since my previous comment, still not mastered it but there seems to be a problem with colour schemes and pieces (couldn’t get the translucent dome pieces at all on it). this may be that they didnt program the package to find all pieces or that i’m not using it properly, or that there are additional piece’s packages to open / download seperately…. I dunno

Is there an electronic version of the ship and deck plans available that’s any cleaner or larger than the illustration in Under New Management?

For the LDraw software use this link for the Windows XP version (Also 98, ME, NT Ver 4, 2000) http://www.ldraw.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=104

I want to see a Petey plush toy available for next Holiday Season. Please. I love collecting Web Comic plush toys.

Anyone know a location from which i can download a compatible Lego builder for Ubuntu(Deban, Linux) w/o using wine?

  14. sendai Says:

    Nekody, check out ldraw.org.

If the Windows version doesn’t work under Wine, then you’ll have something to whine about. Ba-dum chhh!

    Sorry.

Dev Dot Nul: The deck plan in my copy of UNM is pretty clean. If you want to use it as reference material, you may, depending on your eyesight, want a magnifying glass, but other than that it seems pretty good to me. What are you planning to do with it?

Oooh… What FPSs have level-editors flexible enough to recreate the Serial Peacemaker’s interior?

LeoCAD, from http://leocad.org/ , runs fine on both Windows and GNU/Linux.

  17. Dev Dot Nul Says:

Hey Sam. My copy is clean enough as well, I was wondering how much grief would go into a minifig scale version of the SP.

Now that I know, I’m deciding if it’s worth the effort to part out one hundred and fifty five Millennium Falcon kits just to make the multi-cannons. Then there’s the annie plants. . .

Yup, the Farce Is Strong in me, and it’s causing some serious bipolar fluctuations as I go back and forth on the level of insanity it would require.

  18. Sam Says:

Wow, you’re considering a minifig scale SP? The SP’s 140m long and almost 30m high not counting the tanks. I don’t know what scale minifigs are (except of course that they’re not really to scale), and it’s been a while since I’ve looked at one, but I’m pretty sure they’re bigger than 1/100 scale. That’s going to be a big model.

The little one above can be used with minifigs though – play with it in “Starcraft scale”. Don’t know what I mean? Look at the Science Vessels in Starcraft, and think about the mission that’s set inside a Science Vessel…

Oooh… I’ve seen a Gundam-based Starcraft mod. Imagine a Schlockiverse-based one… Would you mine loot to buy mercenaries? And if the mod continues Starcraft’s lax approach to scale… Um, well, actually I think including battleplates would go somewhat beyond even Starcraft scale…

  19. Dev Dot Nul Says:

Minifig is 48th scale (well, for height anyway) so the SP is about the only Schlock ship that’s remotely doable.

I finally found a way to explain the sizes to my son who kept insisting the Tunguska was what he wanted to see. Our local park is just big enough to fit a 167 meter equilateral triangle into on the grass so we went out and paced it out last night. He stood in awe-stricken silence for nearly 30 seconds before asking “So when can you start?” Oh to be eight again. . .

  20. DamienPS Says:

I forgot to say that I got hold of almost all of the lego required in white except for the quarter circle plates as they were $5 each. So I got them in a light blue. I could email a picture if required.
