Book 16: Big, Dumb Objects — Part IV

Transcript

NARRATOR: The Commodore's villa, Jumpstar Prime...

UNUIAYYA: Hello, Commodore.

CDRE TAGON: Hello Mayor. What fair winds bring you to my porch?

UNUIAYYA: Our researchers have located a world forge. They require an armed escort while they investigate it further.

CDRE TAGON: Winds of war, then.

UNUIAYYA: I suppose that's fair.

CDRE TAGON: Is this forge thing in contested space? Does somebody else already have their flag on it?

UNUIAYYA: The survey drones have not seen any flags.

UNUIAYYA: But once word gets out there will likely be flags aplenty. The artifact is extremely valuable, and scientists are leaky.

CDRE TAGON: Scientists don't have to be leaky.

UNUIAYYA: But the spread of knowledge is much like osmosis.

Valuable information moves from an area of greater concentration to an area of lesser concentration.

CDRE TAGON: I had a chem class once.

Osmosis requires a semi-permeable membrane.

UNUIAYYA: The metaphor is not perfect.

CDRE TAGON: It gets better if you put the scientists inside hermetically sealed bags.

UNUIAYYA: That does not seem to be better for the scientists.

CDRE TAGON: Breathing bag-air is probably better than breathing the winds of war.
