Book 19: A Function of Firepower — Part III

Note: Captain Landon's interest in deep history and its various applications in light of Fermi's Paradox stems from a conversation he had with the previous U.N.S. Ambassador in Jumpstar Prime, an account of which can be found here.

NARRATOR: Jumpstar Prime...

SORLIE: You're wearing your “cleaning my sidearm” face, Captain Landon.

TENZY: I am not a sidearm, and I clean my own self, Ambassador Sorlie.

SORLIE: Which is why Landon now uses that face for other things.

LANDON: Hrrmph.

LANDON: It's my thinking face. I'm thinking about what Lieutenant Lefevre said.

LANDON: This deep history conference aligns with my interests.

LANDON: Lately I've been looking into Fermi's Paradox, and the concept of “great filters.” It seems to me deep history holds the answers.

SORLIE: The face says worried, not just thinking.

LANDON: 'Cause I am worried. If a Fermi-scale filter scrapes civilization off the galactic plane and into history's deep dustbin, I won't be able to secure your person.

SORLIE: [Pauses]

SORLIE: Most people view existential threats in terms of their existence, not their employment.

LANDON: [Pauses]

LANDON: I guess most people haven't figured out that you are what you do.
