Book 7: Emperor Pius Dei — Part V: Glamour Assault
Note: Any "blank" ammunition loud enough to sound like a gunshot and bright enough to provide muzzle-flash can also be deadly at close enough range. Elf is just outside that range, such that the muzzle-flash is blinding, and the report deafening, but the column of expanding gas is not driving bits of the officers' foreheads into their (rather tiny) brains.

That's awfully considerate of her.
