Book 16: Big, Dumb Objects — Part IV

NARRATOR: Elsewhere...

ARCHIE: That looks like it was expensive.

PETEY: How so?

ARCHIE: You sacrificed three capital warships in order to save twenty-eight lives.

Enemy lives.

PETEY: Yes. Will those twenty-eight sophonts still be my enemies in ten years? What about ten thousand?

The future is big. I want to find out what these people can become, and I can't do that if they're dead.

ARCHIE: So it's an investment.

PETEY: An expensive one. I am going to miss those ships.
